And sent to the Upper House by Capt Codd and Mr Clark.
They return and Say they delivered it.
Mr Hill from the Committee of Accounts delivers Mr
Speaker the Journall of that Committee.
Coll: Addison from the Upper House delivers Mr Speaker
the bill to prevent the buying & Selling of offices, thus Endorst
Viz.

By the Upper House of Assembly June the 3d 1719

Read & will pass with the Amendments proposed.

And the following Message Viz:

By the Upper House of Assembly
June the 3d 1719

Gent. On Reading the bill against buying and Selling of

L. H. J.

offices and to prevent Corruption in officers This house Pro-
poses the following Amendment Viz. at X (to the Prejudice of
his Lordships Secretarys in Great Britain or their Deputy
for the time being, Residing here, or any Other Superior
officer who has his Commission Immediately from his said
Lordship or) with which if your house Concur rs the bill will
pass.

Thereupon resolved the following Message be prepared
Viz:

By the Lower House of Assembly, June the 3d 1719.
May it Please Your Honours
We take the Amendment proposed to the bill against buying
and Selling of offices &ca to be Such as would in a Manner
defeat the whole bill, which we think so very necessary for the
well fare of this Province and so agreeable to the Statutes of
the 5th and 6th of Edward the 6th and of the first of Wm and
Mary that we must pray your Honours Concurrence with us
that the bill may pass with a proviso that it shall relate only to
such offices or officers as shall be hereafter granted or ap-
pointed and to such Deputations as shall be hereafter made.
