The Lower House. 215

Diverting your Excy from the Prosecutn of Such good de-
signs or in the makeing your Excy uneasy in the unbyass'd
Methods of Your Administration.
But that Papists and their Adherents Should Attack your
Excys Character and Interest Seems not Strange, but rather
the naturall product of your Excy's Zealous regard for the
Establishment of the protestant Interest and Defending it
against the Attempts of those who valued themselves So much
upon the Advances they had made (by deceiving and Impose-
ing upon their Ldpps) towards Introducing themselves into an
Equal Share with the Protestants of the Administration of
the Govrmt of this Province, which their Lordships on better
Information did so readily and Justly Deprive them of to
our Great Satisfaction. Such a Regard as this is Cause
Enough to Excite their utmost Endeavours agl the best of
men ; We doubt not their will and hope we Can't be blamed if
we Endeavour to restrain their Power.
What other Causes of Complaint the Gent: Your Excy
mentions Can have agt you we Cannot Imagine and take this
Opportunity of declaring that we know not that ever your
Excy has done them any Injury Either by your Person or
Government. The Relacon your Excy is pleased to Give us
of the Steps the Roman Catholicks were takeing to Advance
their Power is very Convinceing and lays us under the Great-

L. H. J.

est Obligatns of Gratitude to your Excy for so generously
opposeing them and Setting the whole matter in a Clear Light
before their Ldps ; without which these their Subtile Jesuiticall
falsities might have possibly Past for truth the Consequences
whereof we presume not to Determine.
"The more Vehemt the Romans and their Adherents are in
their Endeavours to heap indignities upon your Excy the
Stronger is the Evidence of your Excy's Sincerity to the
Present Establishments in Church and State to which the
Roman Catholicks are known to have so great an Aversion
both by Inclination and Principle that it can be deemed no
honour for a true Protestant to have their Applause nor any
Scandall to suffer their Reproach, And as their Ldps on your
Excys Representation to them have been so Just to your
Excy's Character and Conduct as not to Give way to the
Insinuations of the Papists on their Groundless fears and
Jealousies when they had not the Confidence to assigne the
Least of facts, But on the Contrary have Signifyed their
approbation of your Integrity to their Lordps in Keeping them
within due bounds by such Gentle methods as you have always

taken so we hope their Ldps will look upon any fresh Com-
plaints that have or shall be made agt your Excy as Ground-
