The Upper House. 17

Bounds of that Law which they once rejoyced at as a favour.
And we hope they'l better understand the present Establishmt
than to endeavour any further Infringemt of it.

Your Excellency's frequent recomending to us the propa-
gateing Learning is a further Instance, how much your Ex-
cellency has at heart the generall Welfare of our Country,
The want whereof is but too Evident Amongst us, And when
we reflect, how Zealous your Excy has been in Promoting

U. H. J.

learning for us and how wanting we have been to ourselves in
that part We can scarce Expect to Escape the reproach of
those we represent ; but we must begg leave to Charge this our
Remissness on the great discouragement we have already met
with in having monys that are raised in this Province applyed
to the maintaining a School in another by which never any
one Inhabitant of this have reaped the least Advantage.
This manner of Application we are psuaded had never been
used, had not our neighbours in Virginia made some misrepre-
sentations concerning it. If we could be so happy by your
Excellency's Assistance to have this Case truly Stated and a
proper Application made for redress, We shou'd not doubt
success from the Justice of our case, And then we should with
Cheerfullness Exert ourselves in the Endeavouring to make
such an Establishment as might give our present youth &
Posterity an Opportunity of Learning. In the Interim we
shall be glad of Embracing all Opportunities to support the
present Schooll that may not be too burthensome to the publick
And should be glad to receive such Proposalls as the present
Rector & Visittors shall think fitt to make for our Assistance
in the Consideration of that so Important an Affair.
We shall Imediately proceed to do what may be proper in
respect to the Regulation of Ordinarys.

P. 26

We again acknowledge their Lordships great goodness
particularly in the Regard they have had to the preservation
of our Constitution And the Continuing your Excellency their
Governour Over us of whose Loyalty Fidelity honour &
Justice we have had so Ample an Experience that we cannot
Esteem this the least of their Lordships Favours Especially
since by the Influence of your Excellencys Administration and
Example we are Encouraged with all Freedom to demean
ourselves as becomes a People truly Loyal to his Majty Dutifull
to their Lordships & Just to our Country.

The House Adjourns till To morrow morning.
