410 Assembly Proceedings, June 22- July 3, 1714.

L. H. J.
Lib. 41

By the Governor and Council in Assembly
June 28th 1714

We think fit to recommend to you that whereas sundry
Statutes of that Part of her Majesty's Kingdom of Great
Britain called England have been found very useful and bene-
ficial within this her Majesty's Province of Maryland both in
Causes civil and criminal and for that it hath been often
observed that many of the aforesaid good and beneficial Stat-
utes of England not being local but seeming general have
sometimes been asserted as Law and at other Times denied
as such as well by the Lawyers in this Province as the several
Courts wherein they have been pleaded and offered which

renders the Law in this Province very dubious and uncertain,
Whether it is not absolutely necessary the several Courts
should be well informed how to give their Judgments upon
the said Statutes and therefore if it is not advisable your
House should join with this Board to state this matter and to
direct our Agent to procure the Opinion of some of her
Majesty's Council at Law and two other eminent Lawyers
whether the said Statutes of England are in Force within this
Province or not; to the End her Majesty's Subjects here may
know by what Rule they walk and the several Courts of Law
how to render their Judgments thereon.
