352 Assembly Proceedings, June 2- July 3, 1714.

U. H. J.

It is a great Satisfaction to us that your Excellency is an
Eye Wittness to the Lowness of that Ebb which this poor
province in its Circumstances is reduced to And that you are
pleased to take such particular notice of it. Our Deplorable
Condition being known We hope the Speedier Relief from
that Majesty that never yet denyed her royal Aid to any of her
suffering subjects that implored it

Her Majesty's prevailing Endeavours in the procuring that
peace that has removed so many Burthens from our Trade
justly claims the most hearty and sincere Acknowledgments
can be made from dutiful & Loyal Subjects to the best of
Princes, But yet we fear (so far have we been influenced by
the War) that without our Sovereign's more particular Grace
and favour extended to us we shall not be able by any Endeav-
ours of our own to recover our lost Circumstances nor prevent
the total Ruin of this tobo trade, being our only Staple

p. 891

We shall always pay a Strict regard to her Majesty's royal
Instructions & shall readily and cheerfully apply ourselves to
the observance of them.

We heartily congratulate your Excellency's safe Arrival
here and acknowledge our Utmost Obligations to her Majesty
for favouring us with your Excellencys Administration under
whose Governmt We assure ourselves of being an happy people

Signed p order of the House of Delegates
June the 23d 1714. T Macnemara Cl

To which his Excellency was pleased to return the following
answer

Gentlemen,
1 am much obliged to you for the kind sense you express
in the Concern I bear for the Sufferings of this Province in
the decay of Trade

Her Majesty who has unspeakable Tenderness for the
Prosperity of her Subjects will never be wanting on her part
for your speedy Redress

Your dutiful Expressions in relation to your ready Compli-
ance with her Majesty's Instructions is the Effect of the prudent
& Loyal temper of your House which will always render good
Subjects grateful to the best of Queens

I am much Obliged to you for the Opinion you conceive of
me and will employ my utmost Efforts to be useful in my
Administration
