The Message and Bill relating to the Indians brought Yester-
day from the Council Read and debated and ordered to be
answered as followeth
By the House of Delegates
11th Nov. 1712
We have considered and debated the Message and Bill sent
from your Honble Board yesterday by Colo Whittington and
John Hall Esqr relating to the Indians but not being satisfied
of the Reasons inducing your Honours to recommend that
Bill as it is drawn and taking the same to be of no great
Concernment and being willing to shew due Respect to what
comes from your Honble Board have thought it reasonable to
agree to the Bill first Paragraph thereof with these Amend-
ments Viz.
For Recovery of the Penalty in any County Court of this
Province and that it may be to the Use of the County. But
as to last Paragraph thereof relating to false Rumours we
think it may be wholly rejected for that it will be of ill Conse-
quence and we are willing a Clause should be added to pro-
hibit any Inhabitants from trusting any Indian for any Liquors
or taking any Pawn from them for any Debt and buying their
Guns Matchcoats &ta on Pain of returning them and losing
their Debts upon which Amendments we are willing to agree
to the Bill. We concur with you it is necessary the Indians be
acquainted with the Penalties our Laws inflict on the Breaches
of them in such manner as you prescribe.
