By the Council in Assembly April 8th 1706

Whereas heretofore a Lott was laid out for the Rector of St
Ann's Parish in the Town and Port of Annapolis and also
another Lot for a Vestry House. Now forasmuch as there is
a very good Vestry-House built and adjoined to the Church
there will be no Necessity that the former House should remain
to that use but that it may be highly necessary it be annexed
to the Parson's Lot & some further Improvemt made thereon
in Order to some comfortable Provision to be made of an
House for the Reception & Accommodation of a Minister for-
ever to which his Excy is willing to contribute if the House
think fit to give Encouragemt thereto

Read and referred till the Afternoon
Brought into the House the Petition of Mary Newell which
was read and ordered to be entered Viz.

To his Excy the Govr her Maj'ty's Honble Council & the
Genl Assembly.
The humble Petition of Mary Newell of Annapolis, humbly
sheweth,
That your Petitioner hath been a very laborious and Pains-
taking woman for several years in this Province and hitherto
hath maintained herself by her Drudgery. But now may it
please your Excy & Honours She finds old Age and Impotency
has much impeded her that she cannot longer scuffle in the
world so to provide herself with Necessaries as formerly she
was able to do Therefore humbly addresses herself to your
Excy & Honours humbly requesting Leave to vend Coffee Tea
and a Dram Not that She is in the least desirous to keep a

Tipling House or any Thing tending to Excess and Intemper-
ance but purely to capacitate herself to get an honest Lively-
hood without being burthensome to any Body I humbly im-
plore your Excy and Honours out of your Abundance of your
Consideration and Pity will be pleased to grant Relief in the
Premises And as in Duty bound will ever pray.
The above Petition was by the Council indorsed thus.

By his Excy the Governor & Council April 9th 1706.

The within Petition being read and the Petitioner's Age and
indigent Circumstances considered this Board is willing to
give her such Leave. But in Regard there is an Act of As-
sembly prohibiting any Person to sell strong Liquors in or
upon their Houses or Plantations without License from the
