Then was brought into the house and read the foli paper
wch his Excy was pleased to say to some Romish preists &ca

Gent
Its the unhappy temper of you and All yor tribe to growe
Insolent upon Civillity And never know how to use it And
Yet of All people You haue the least reason For considering
that if the necessary laws that are made were lett loose they
are Sufficient to Crush You And wch (if Your Arrogant prin-
ciples haue not blinded Your Understanding) You must needs
dread.
You might methinks be Content to live quietly as you may
And lett the exercize of yor Superstitious Vanity's be confined to
Your Selves, without proclaiming them at publiq times And in
publiq places unless you Expect by yourGawdy Shews and Ser-
pentine pollicy to Amuse the Multitude and beguile the unthink-
ing part of them An Art of deceipt well knowne to be Among
You But Gent be not deceiv'd for tho the Clemency of her
Majts Government And of her Gratious inclination leads her
to make All her Subjects Easy that know how to be so Yet
her Majty is not without means sufficient to Curb insolence in
All but more Especially in Your fraternity who are more
Eminently soe then others Abounding with it And I Assure
You the next occasion you give me You shall feele the truth
of what I say Which You should now doe but that I am wil-
ling upon the Earnest Solicitations of some Gent to make one
tryall more (And it shalbe but this one) of yor temper :
In plain and few words, Gent if you intend to live here lett
me hear no more of these things, for if I doe And they are
made Good Against you be Assured He chastise Yoe And
least You should flatter yor selves that the Severrity of the
laws will be a means to moove the pitty of Your Iudges I
Assure you I dont intend to deale soe with You. He remoove
