D. as I lately hear Mr Quaryy has Seized in Pensilvania where more would have been taken if those people had not sheltred them from Justice which can't but be ill taken here and bring these propriety Governmts under great Suspitions that they Value more their own indirect profitts than the weilfare of England and the Observation of the Laws . The Lords Justices Approve of your Integrity in giving a faithfull Account of what Turner had brought with him & they will move his Maty that you may be no Looser by it, in the mean time they direct that you take the 400 pieces into your possession out of which you will Supply Turner with what Necessarys for his Subsistance & for the bringing him into England I hope we shall meet with some of the Pyrates that you mention are coming for Bristoll & London I have given Notice of them to the Mayor of Bristoll and the Comrs of the Customs here, we have no Account yet that any of those Ves sells are Arrived & the Comrs of the Customs have Sent di p. 280 rections to the Severall parts they are like to touch at that they may be Secured as soon as they can be discovered. You will very much recommend your Selfe here by the Countenance of your diligence and faithfull discharge of your Trust which will not be a greater Satisfaction to any body than to Sr Your most faithfull humble Servt Ia: Vernon
Whitehall 17th August 1699 Sr I take the Opportunity of Mr Pens Going to his Governmt in America to Acquaint you that we have heard of the Arrivall of the five Pyrates in the Ships you gave Notice of the two that Landed at Bristoll made Such hast to get out of the Town Ihat the Orders I sent for Seizing them came too late, they are now publisht in the Gazett with a reward to any that Shall p. 280 Apprehend them the three Dutch Men Chang'd their ships before they Came into Harbour and are all Gone for Amster dam, we have Sent thither their Descriptions by wch they may look after them if they think fitt, in the mean time I ought to let you know that your Advices were very Exact & dispatch't wth great Diligence, I have heard from Loo, that his Maty was well Satisfyed with your Care and was very inclinable that you should be incouraged to proceed in the Same Manner. I shall only Add that I hope Mr Penn and you will live in friendship and good Correspondence that you will mutually Assist one another in whatever may promote the prosperity of the plantations & the generall Advantage of England, the
