Lib. X. It being Debated in Council whether it might not be fitting p. 221 upon the late murther committed by the Indians upon Thomas Thickpenny & his wife in Prince George's County to have a certain young Indian Lad at Choptico Son to the Emperor of Piscattoway secured & kept in the nature of an hostage until some satisfaction had as to that Murther The securing the said Indian Lad is not thought Conve- nient at this time but it is advised that the Frontiers be well Secured until such time as the Assembly meets & that Collo Beal continue ranging & endeavour to make some discovery if Possible of the Indians that were Concerned in that murther Resolved that Colonel Courts, Coll Beal, Collo Addison, Collo Smallwood & Mr John Hawkins acqt the Indians that are adjacent to them & came in to be our Friends that they may expect very good treatment from this Government on their good Behavr Whereas Mr John Hawkins has sold those Indians some Match coats & Powder moved at the Board whether he may deliver them the said Match coats & Powder Resolved that the said Mr Hawkins deliver the Indians the Match coats but no Powder as he will Answer the contrary at his Peril Resolved that a Messenger be sent to the Empr of a Pis- cattoway by a sufficient number of men to demd Satisfaction for this late it being very strongly presumed to have been committed by his Indians Advised that in case the Emperor or King Peter should accidentally come down among the Inhabitants that they be p. 222 Secured & brought before his Excellency the Governor Collo Addison informs his Excellency that Provisions are not to be had in Prince Georges County for the Rangers Subsistance Whereupon his Excellency is pleased to say he will Supply them from Annapolis Then were read his Excellencys Commission & Instruc tions to Colonel Ninian Beal Commander of the Rangers on Potomack whereupon it fell under the Consideration of & was advised by the Board that in Case Coll Beal or his men in ranging should meet any Sculking Indians which could give no good Accot of themselves that he should be directed to bring them before Colo Addison to be examined & dealt withal according to his Discretion Resolved that upon Application to his Excy a good Quantity of Fusees & Musquets be sent to Collo Addison to be distributed among the poor Inhabitants on the Frontires The Council desire his Excellency will be pleased that in case any further Mischief happens to be done by Indians that
