                 560   Appendix to Council Proceedings, 1696—1729.

            

             B.   M. best of his remembrance) were tht if it so hap'ned that if they

             Vol. 25. got a better ship & quitted the Brigantine tht then they should

            

                 allow such a proportion of their gettings in satisfaction of the

                 sd Brigantine tht he tht stole to the value of a piece of 8 from

            

                 another should be put upon a maroon'd Island that he that

                 was wounded in any engagemt should have such an overplus

                 share of slaves if they took any wth severll more such like

                 articles wch this Depont cannot remember.

                   And this Depont further saith tht he heard there were sev

                 er” servts belonging to that Province wch they imagin'd to be

                 entertain'd & harboured by the sd Privateer & was told by

                 one of the Burgesses of Newcastle Coty how tht Majr Daniel

                 son disarmed all the men tht were sent to take the sd Privateer

                 tht he heard there was some of the Inhabitants of Pensilvania

                 tht fitted out some men wth necessaries to goe in the Priva

                 teer for wch they were to make a considerable satisfaccion out

                 of what prises they tooke & further saith not

                      [Extract from Quarry's letter.]

                 The latter pt of Col. Quarry's paper:

                   I could give many more Instances of the Irregular trade of

                 tht place, but for brevity sake doe forbear, however I cannot

                 omit two remarkable passages about 10 or 12 moneths ago.

                 There came to Philadelphia a vessel directly from Denmark,

                 loaden with wine, Copper vessels, and several other European

                 goods. There she lay till all the goods were unloaden and the

                 vessel unrigged, and then the Governr ordered the Collectr to

                 seize her, which accordingly was done, and the vessel con

                 demned, and sold again to the Mercht for a very inconsider

                 able summe. They immediately rigged her again and sent

                 her away. This business was so very ill managed, tht it

                 opened peoples mouths and made thm talk very hardly of the

                 Governr

                   Another Instance is of a Briganteen now in tht Harbour.

                 She came from New York to loade Tobacco, and took in all

                 most all her loading without giving any bond or security.

                 This was a thing so notorious tht it was talked of by some,

                 who they feared would give yor Excy an Account of it (which

                 is the only thing tht keeps thm in some Awe) upon which the

                 Governt sent the Collectr to seize her, which was accordingly
