An Account of the Sevrll Offices within the Province of Maryland.
first His Excellency John Hart Esqr Capt Genrll & Gov ernr in Cheif of the said Province.
The Council Consisting of twelve of the most able and discreet Gentlemen of the Province who at Present are
Col Edward Lloyd Col Thos Addison Col Wm Holland John Hall Esqr The Col Wm Coursey Col Wm Whittington Honble Col Thos Ennalls Philemon Lloyd Esqr Lt Col Samuel Young Lt Col Richard Tilghman & Col Thomas Greenfeild John Dorsey Esqr lately dead Who Assist his Excellency the Governs with their Advice on all Urgent Occasions relating to the State welfare and defence of the Province: And are by Act of Assembly allowed for their Attendance each day in Council and in the Gen erll Assembly One hundred and fifty pounds of Tobacco, but were formerly Supported Out of the Lord Proprietarys Reve nue His Excellency the Govnr and Council with four Delegates for every one of the twelve Countys in the Province and two Burgesses from the City of Annapolis, Compose the General Assembly or Legislature of the Province representing three Estates thereof Viz. His Excellency the Govnr the first: His Matys Council, the Second And the Delegates their Electors towitt the Free Holders and other Inhabitants of the Province, the third, Wherein his Excellency the Governr has allways a Negative Voice. His Excellency the Govnr by Virtue of His Matys Royal Commission is Keeper of the Great Seale of the sd Province in Consideration whereof there are Sundry flees settled by Act of Assembly for the Sealing the several Processes and Decrees of that Court the Yearly Value of which Fees are very un certain according as the Publick or Private Buisness happens to be more or less Yearly: The sdl Fees have in some Years amounted to fifty Thousand pounds of Tobacco p Ann. Sel dom more but very often less and are dispersed in the sevrll Countys out of which the Sevrl Sherriffs have a Sallary often p Cent for Collecting.
