30 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1698.
Lib. x. His Excellency Sr Edmd Andros his Majestys Lieut & Govr General of Virginia's letter being read & Considered Advised that the following answer be returned thereto vizt
Sir By Joseph Man I received your Excellencys Letter of the 17th of October last with an inclosed copy of your Proclama tion for the apprehending of Mr John Good Senior & if the warrant which you mention therein were in force why was not he taken by it when he was with your Excellency the last spring which is here proved upon Oath your Excellencys Proclamation seems to me to be like one of the Watch houses on the Barbary Shoar to give notice when the Christians are Coming to take them that they may fly to it for Safety because as yet no news of the said Goods being taken (altho he has had the Confidence and Impudence to write a Letter to one of his Majestys honble Council here dated the 20th of October last) is come to Your Excys most humble Servant Fra Nicholson
The Continuance or discontinuance of the two Parties of Rangers on Potomack having been debated in the Assembly Resolved that they should be disbanded Ordered that the p. 190 honble Collo Iohn Addison take care to discharge them & pay them as far as the Tobacco raised & allowed them will amount to & that he see their quarters paid of also that the said Collo Addison & Mr William Tanyhill pursuant to a former ordinance of Assembly see their several Accots fairly Stated in order to be paid in the next years Levy if any re maining due to them Whereas by the publick Treasurers Accot it appears that very few Officers have paid the impositions by Act of Assem bly laid upon their respective Offices Ordered therefore that the several Sheriffs return an Accot to the said Treasurers of who have & who have not paid & that the said Treasurers upon their refusal to Comply there with acquaint his Majestys Atty General who is hereby order ed to prosecute them Ordered that the several Clarks of the respective Counties return a list of what Officers are in their said County who ought to pay the said Impositions Ordered that Mr Sly Clark & Masons fines Amounting to the sum of 16000 l of Tobacco be by the Committee for Stating the publick Revenue appropriated for payment of those persons who had great Trouble Given them by their
