Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1698. 29
The honble Iames Frisby Esqr says that his Father in the Lib. X. time of the Lord Baltimore bought some Land of his Lord ship which was escheated & so found by a Iury of Enquest Whereupon it is observed that the reason why the Lord Baltimores Agent do not get the Office for Escheats settled in this Province is because his Lordship will not do any one act to acknowledge his Majestys Government here Whereupon on Consideration of this Petition & the petition p. 188 of Joseph Johnson of Dorchester County advised that some remonstrance be made to their Lordships the right honble the Lords of the Council of trade & Plantations that some care may be taken & directions given for the Settling this matter of escheats here for want whereof several ill Consequences may ensue to the disturbance of this his Majestys Province & Especially in regard that the methods now used by his Lord- ships Agents in setling Lands where no heir appears here without any inquest found thereon is nothing but a delusion & fraud to the unthinking people that purchase the same & have nothing but his Lordships Right therein
