The Petition of Benedict Leonard Calvert to the King. P. R. O. To the King's most Excellent Majesty
The humble Petition of Benedict Leonard Calvert Son of Charles Lord Baltemore Sheweth That he having for some years expressed to severall, his In clinations to become a member of the Church of England, de termined in November 1713, to declare himself so, and accordingly soon after publickly renounced the Romish Errors, and received from the hands of the Bishop of Hereford, the blessed Sacrament of the Lords supper, in the Church of St Anne Westminister. That the Lord Baltemore his Father (whom he had some time before acquainted with his Resolutions) resented this So much that he withdrew four hundred & fifty Pounds p annum of what he had for severall Years allowed him, which he (a little before yor Petitioners changing his Religion) assured him (by a letter under his own hand) he intended to continue. That by this unkindness of his Father yor Petitioner was reduced to live upon his marriage settlement, which is but Six hundred Pounds p Annum, & out of which he allows his Wife two, for seperate Maintenance. That yor Petr hath Six children, four Sons & two Daughters, all which his Father Educated, & at his own charge main tain'd in Popish Seminaries abroad, without any deduction, either from the monys arising from his marriage settlement, or the Four Hundred & Fifty Pounds p annum above men tioned. That yor Petr immediately after his changing his Religion, sent for his children, and placed them all in and about London at protestant Schools, where they now are. That her late Majesty was Graciously pleased, out of her Royall Bounty, in Consideration of yor Petr's hard usage from his Father, & his slender Fortune during his Father's life, to grant him a Pension of Three hundred Pounds p Annum, For the maintenance of his Children during the life of his said Father, who is Eighty Five Years old, & longer than his Father's life yor Pet' neither did, nor doth desire any Pension. That (at yor Petr's request, & that he might have some Far ther relief in his prsent Circumstances) her Majesty was also pleased to appoint Captain Iohn Hart, Nephew to the prsent Arch Bishop of Tuam who had served severall Years both in Spain & Portugall Governr of Maryland, who out of the Proffits thereof has obliged himself to render yor Petr the suflie of £500. p Annum.
