180 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1704.
Lib. C. B. Coursey Mr John Taylor Mr Nicholas Low and Mr Robert Tyler. Upon the unhappy Occasion of the State house being Burnt last Night. His Excellency proposes upon this Sad Occasion of the State house being burnt that Some place be Appointed to place the Records therein and a House taken for the Provin ciall and County Courts to Sitt in. The Gentlemen Advise his Excellency will be pleased to Direct that the Provinciall and County Records be lodged above in the ffree schoole, and that Mr Young take care to have Shelves made. Also Resolved. That a Day of Humiliation be Sett aside. The Gentlemen present are of opinion that it is absolutely Necessary the Governour & Councill upon this Exigency take care to provide an house for the Provinciall Court to Sitt in. p. 17 That Care be taken to have a list of the Records taken to see what are wanting. And that Mr Young and Majr Greenberry See the Said List taken. Upon which Occasion all the Clearks in Towne be ordered to Assist. Also Advised that the Comissarys Records be lodged in the Back Porch of the firee schoole which is to be made Tight and Shelves put up there for the Books. It being Represented that great Quantitys of Ruffle were imported from Pensilvania over the head of the Bay. Ordered that Mr Vanderheydon have a Copy of the Law about the Duty on Ruffle from Pensilvania and Instructions given him thereupon. p. 18 Saturday October 21st 1704.

Present His Excellcy the Governour.
The honrble Thomas Brooke Esqr Coll John Hamond Coll Edward Loyd Lt Coll William Holland and James Sanders Esq. His Excellency was Pleased to acquaint the Gentlemen of her Majestys Councill of the unhappy Occasion of their now meeting. Then was Read the aforegoing Minutes taken October 18th The wich were Approved of by the Board and ordered accordingly. Ordered that a Proclamation Issue for Wednesday the 29th of November to be Sett aside as a day of Humiliation and that therein an Account be given of the Land and Provinciali Records Saved. Ordered the Papers and Records be Sorted and lists taken before Mr Young & Majr Greenberry Upon which Occasion
