Upon the Death of Mr James Rounds one of the Justices
of the Provincial Court.
Ordered That Lievt Colo William Whittington Succeed him.
His Excellency proposes to the Board if it may not be advis-
able upon this Rumour of an unavoidable Warr in Europe it
should be recomended to the Assembly to Consider what
Measures will be most advisable to be taken to render the
Militia here more usefull agt any Suddain Emergency or In-
vasion by a forreign Enemy, Whereupon the following Mes-
sage Sent to the house by Colo John Hamond and Colo Fran-
cis Jenkins vizt

By his Excellancy the Govr & Councill in Assembly
May the 12th 1701.

His Excellency having this day required our Sentiments
upon the Rumour of an unavoidable War likely to Ensue in
Europe what Methods would most Conduce to the rendring
the Militia of this Province more usefull and necessary for the
defence thereof agt any suddain Invasion from a forreign
Enemy We recomend it to your Consideration wherein the
Militia may be the better regulated for the defence of the
Province and that you will Acquaint us with the Resolutions
of Your house thereupon

May it please Your Excellency.
By this our humble Address we represent to your Excy

That we find by our Journalls and other Proceedings
that out of the 12d p hhd By the Law of this Province settled
on his Maty for the Supporte of Government &c. his Maty has
been Graciously pleased to direct three pence thereof towards
Supplying the Province with Arms Amunition and Imple-
ments of War which by the Blessing of God & Your Excys
good Conduct & Care has Supplyed us with a Sufficient
quantity in Number tho: many deficient in quality and we
hope money in Bank upon the Same fund.
2 That these Rumours of Wars as it prompts all others
so as to put ourselves in the best Posture of Defence we are
able by Cleansing & making fitt for Service those Arms &
