546 Appendix to Council Proceedings, 1696/7-98.
P R. o. Church and duly observed and to endeavour to get a Law If the same be not already passed in the Assembly for the strict observation of the said Tables. You are to take care that Drunkeness and Debauchery swearing and Blasphemy be severely punished and that none be admitted to Public Trust and Employment whose ill fame and conversation may bring Scandall thereupon. You shall take care that all Planters and Christian servants be well and fitly provided with Arms and that they be listed under Officers and when and as often as you shall think fit mustered and trained whereby they may be in a better readiness for the defence of our said Colony under your Government. You are to take especiall care that neither the frequency nor unreasonableness of remote marches, musters & trainings be an unnecessary impediment to the affairs of the Planters. And you shall not upon any occasion whatsoever establish or put in execution any Article of Warr or other Law Martiall upon any of our subjects inhabitants of our said Province without the advice and consent of our Councill of Maryland. And for the greater security of that our Province you are to appoint fit Officers and Commanders in the severall parts of the Country bordering upon the Indians, who upon any in vasion may raise men and armes to oppose them untill they shall receive your directions therein. In case of distress of any of our Plantations you shall upon application of the respective Governors to you, assist them with what aid the condition and safety of your Government will permit. You shall cause a Survey to be taken of all the consid erable landing places & Harbours in Our said Province and with the advice of Our Councill erect in any of them such Fortification as shall be necessary for the security and advan tage of Our Province WCh shall be done at the publick Charge of the Country not doubting of the chearful concurrence of the Inhabitants thereunto from the common security and bene fit they will receive thereby. You shall take an Inventory of all arms affiunition and Stores remaining in any of Our Magazines or Garisons in Our said Province and send an account of them yearly to us by one of Our principall Secretaries of State, and to Our Comittee for Trade and Plantations You are to take special care that fit Store Houses be setled throughout Our Province for receiving and keeping of Arms, Amunition and other Publick Stores. That we may be the better informed of the Trade of Our said Province you are to take care that due Entrys be made
