         Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98. 481

                   September the 28th 1698       Lib. X.

       Then came the above Deponent before his Excellency in

     Council & made oath upon the holy Evangelists that the

     above Deposition is true

    

    

                   October the 6th 1696

       Richard Kilburn of the port of Annapolis being Examined

     Before his Excellency in Council upon his Oath says that p. 112

     about six weeks ago being in Company with Mr Iohn Cood at

     Mr Spurns house where he was forced by the said Cood to

     drink, he heard the said Cood among other Extravagant talk

     say that a Dog or a Cow or a Swine had Souls as well as

     men, & being weary of such Company & for his horrible

     Cursing and swearing he went his way & did not stay a

     Quarter of an hour in the house but that he left Mr Bouye,

     Mr Banner Mr Stanley and one Samuel Turner a Taylor in his

     Company

       Iohn Stanley being Sworn Says that he was in Company

     with Mr Cood at the same time with Mr Kilburn & does

     remember the said words spoke by Mr Cood which Mr Ku

     burn hath made oath to & that he had been at several.other

     times in his Company & always heard him talk profusely &

     after a Bantering sort of a manner

       The Jurors of our Sovereign Lord the King for the Body of

     this Province upon their Oaths do present John Cood late of

     St Marys County Gent for that he the said Iohn Cood the Five

     & twentieth day of August in the year of our Lord 1696 & at

     Diverse days & times before & after at the port of Annapolis

     in Ann Arundell County the Love fear duty reverence &

     obedience which every Christian man towards almighty God

     & his Son Iesus Christ our blessed Lord & Saviour ought to

     have, not minding or regarding but wholly withdrawing &

     being moved with the instigation of the devil & of his own

     vain mind & out of the abundance of his wicked & perverse

     heart the Catholick faith greatly contemning these Diabollical

     & blasphemous words following in the presence & heating of p. 113

     diverse of the liege people of the said Lord the King then &

     there being with a loud voice most Devlishly & wickedly & to

     the Terror & astonishment of the said Liege people did pro

     mulge speak & utter that is to say the priests of both the

     Churches were Rogues the priests of the Church of Rome &

     the priests of the Church of Engld meaning & that it was all

     one to serve God or the Devil & that the Bible (the holy
