480 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98. Lib. X. September the 22d 1696 The above Deposition was sworn to before his Excllcy & Council by the above named Iohn Freeman That Alexander Lumley of Ann Arundell County Gentle men being engaged about his own private Buisness in the city of Annapolis in the said County one Mr Ridgly did Invite the said Mr Lumley to come into one Mrs Proctors house to drink with him which the said Lumly did accordingly & then & there met with a person to him the said Lumley then unknown but the said Lumley being accosted by him the said unknown person in an unusual Dialect did inquire of Mr Ridgly what his name was the said Ridgly told him that the said persons name was Cood with the addition of Colo upon which the said Lumley was more attentive to his the said Coods discourse and in a small time afterwards the said Collo Cood told the said Lumley that it was pity he should be a papist tho he thought all Religion to be a sham & that there were never such Persons as Iesus Christ the son of God upon earth whereupon the said Lumley being astonished at the Blas phemy replied that there were great reasons both internal & external to believe the Divinity of our Saviour & Cited a text p. 111 out of St Pauls Epistles & then the said Cood fell into an Argument about the Possibility of God Almightys Generating a son & when he was pressed about the different ways of Generation according to the School divines he said St Paul was an Impertinent fellow & that he did not Believe one word he said all Religion lyes in Tully's Offices Test Alex Lumley
September the 22d 1696 Then Came the above named Alex Lumley before his Excellency in Council who made Oath upon the holy Evange lists to the truth of the forementioned premises The Deposition of Richard Beard of the port of Annapolis aged 40 Years or thereabouts This Deponent saith that about 3 weeks ago being in Com pany with Mr Iohn Cood of St Marys County at Mr Nicholas Spurns house within the port aforesaid the said Cood after some discourse passed between them asked the Deponent whether he never read in Scripture that Christ turned Several Devils out of several women & another person standing by said yes he turned Seven out of Mary Magdalen whereupon Cood answered with an Oath saying by God it was all Lyes for that the Devil never was in woman & therefore could not turne any out & further saith not
