         Proceedings of the Council of Matyland, 1696/7-98. 479

     

        Read the petition of Mr Christopher Vernon wherein he Lib. X.

      prays to be discharged from his Employment of Clerk of Ann

      Arundell County & thereupon ordered that the said Mr Vernon

      do continue to Officiate in that Station until November Court

      next at which time his Year will be up but that in the mean

      time he have Liberty to Officiate by such Sufficient deputy as

      the lustices of Ann Arundel County Court shall approve of

        The Deposition of Henry Wriothesley of the Port of An- p. 109

      napolis

        This Deponent saith that happening in Compa with Collo

      John Cood & some others among their discourse a dispute

      Arose between the said Collo Cood & Mr Alexdr Lumley con

      cerning religion being Gentlemen of different Perswasion &

      in their discourse or Argument the question was put to Mr

      Lumley by the said Cood whether the said Mr Lumley did

      believe in Jesus Christ the said Mr Lumley Replied that he

      did believe why said Collo Cood do you think that God Al

      mighty ever begat a Son upon which Mr Lumley quoted a text

      of Scripture written by St Paul the place where I cannot re

      member Collo Cood upon that Replied St Paul may be an

      impertinent writer as well as other men all Religion byes in

      Tullys offices & further saith not

               The Deposition of Iohn Freeman

        The abovesaid Deponent upon his oath saith that Acci

      dentally meeting with Captain John Cood (als Code) late high

      Sheriff of St Marys County in Maryland in the house of Mr

      Iohn Evans in St Marys City in the said County & Province

      he the said Deponent heard the said Capt Ino Cood als Code

      speak & audibly express in publick talk directed to the said

      Deponent some months before the said dept left his Lodgings

      in the said City to attend & accompany the records of the

      said Province removed to the Town & Port of Annapolis Anno

      Dni 1695

     

                 These following words vizt

        That the priests of both the Churches Roman & Protest

      were Rogues and that it was all one to serve God or the Devil p. 110

      for Religion said he is but Pollicy

        Whereupon the said Deponent saying to the said Captain

      Cood als Code I admire to hear such things from you who as

      I am told are in holy orders your self the said Capt Cood als

      Code thus replied yes I am both Deacon & Priest in the

      Church of England
