July the first 1698 The Council again Sate and were present as Yesterday. And the several Depositions given his Majestys Council at Law to peruse being read in Council are as followeth vizt Mr Gilbert Clark of Charles County deposeth that being in Company with Mr Gerrard Sly at the said Slys house Sly drank a health to Longston where upon the Deponent asking whose health that was Sly told him it was a Gentlemens that was coming in Governor of Maryland the Deponent did hear the said Sly about the beginning of May last publickly dis course that having Entertained a Sollicitor who was a Grand Jacobite to manage his Articles put in before the Lords of the Committee of trade and Plantations against his Excellency Francis Nicholson the day following being with the Solicitor so reteyned there came another Gentlemn a Jacobite who applyed himself to the said Slys Solicitor And told him that he came to Reteine him for a very honest Gentleman Where upon the said Solicitor told him if not Reteined by the other Party he would embrace the Cause & upon the Gentleman making him acquainted for whom he would retein him the p. said Sollicitor told him he could not take it for he was reteyned of the other Side whereupon the said Gentleman Sollr made Answer Damn it You have taken a Cause against the honestest Gentleman of our Party in all his Majestys foreign Plantations upon which the Deponent Asked him the said Sly how could that be and his Excellency the Governor have the favour of the Lord Bishop of London Tush replied the said Slye the Lord Bishop of London knows nothing of him Sly carried the Deponent into his Lodging room & there produced the lournals of the last Assembly and said he had as good infor mation as Mr Nicholson That Mr Slye received several Letters from Capt Francis Harbin and reading one said it was his Sollicitors Letter who had seen Major Langston three days before and that he was
