Chief Justice of the Provincial Court the said Mr Crawford does Confess and Acknowledge that he knows Nothing of truth in any one of them Two Papers being produced to the Board under the hand & Seal of Mr Philip Clark to which he had Signed as Deputy Collector to Geo Muschamp Esqr Collector of Potomack District his Excellency is pleased to ask him by what Power he Acted in that Station who says he did by Virtue of a Deputation from the said Mr Muschamp Ordered that the said Papers be Referred to his Majstys Lawyers for prosecution of the Parties Culpable according to Law p. 36 Friday April the1698 The Council again Sate & were present as Yesterday Collo Ninian Beal came & gave the following Accot of what was done towards the Settlement of the New Rangers Vizt That on Wednesday last was Seven Night he went to Collo Addison & sent to Captain Owen to meet him there but the said Captain Owen being out in the Woods did not Come in till Saturday at which time he Came in Collo Addisons & being by the said Colo Addison & himself dis coursed with about this Affair Colo Addison sent a Couple of Messengers to the Fort to Order the Rangers there to meet him at Wm Taynhills the next day where they meet & Chose ten fitting Men out of the said Rangers to Serve under the said Colo Beal & Captain Owen Vizt five a Piece And did Appoint Two men out of each Party to Shell abt Twenty Bushels of Indian Corn in order to their Speedy Settlement & have as yet proceeded no further A Presentment of the Grand Jury of the Provincial Court being here produced & read wherein they had presented the Justices high Sheriffs & Clerk of Prince Georges County for Levying & receiving Several Sums of Tobacco of the In habitants of that County Contrary to Law The honble Sr Thomas Lawrence Bart his Majstys Secretary is pleased thereon to Observe that he knew Nothing of such Exaction Perpetrated by the Clerk of that County before therefore disclaims any Property in the Tenths of Such Tobacco as the said Clerk hath so illegally Received and with all Signifies that he will take Care to displace him & Consti tute Some other fit & Capable Person in his Stead p. 37 It is thought Convenient that the Provincial Court be Adjourned till the Last Tuesday in Augst next & Ordered accordingly Ordered that John Hazlewood one of the Coroners of
