He says that according to the Words as they are there Lib. X. Expressed he cannot make Oath but will give his answer p. 34 thereto what he knows of it in writing. 14th Article he hath erected a Town in a very ill Remote Place of the Province which he hath named Annapolis Where he holds the Principal Courts enjoyns all Officers to Live their hath put the Countrey to an unreasonable Charge thereby to no Purpose & to add the Charge An ill Con veniency Ordered all manner of Persons that have Business at Common Law or Chancery to Come there on all Occasions & also Summoned all manner of Persons bearing any Sort of Office to attend there to no Purpose but to Expence & Trouble The said Mr Clark does Say he knows Nothing of that Article 15th Article Upon every Slight way without any manner of Occasion he will send for Persons in Business with threats that if they do not immediately attend him he will send for them up in Irons & when they do come up to him he has nothing to say to them but Sware at them & abuse them with his Unreasonable Passion The said Mr Clark does say he knows nothing of that Article but by hear say & being asked who he heard say so does say he cannot pticularly Remember but does think he has heard Mr Slye say so 16th Article he hath put the Countrey to an Unreasonable Charge by Building Churches too Big & too Chargeable for that Countrey to the great Prejudice of so Good a work & upon Land Belonging to Private Persons and in places not Proper nor Convenient to build Churches on The said Clark says he knows nothing of that Article 17th Article There is forty Pounds of Tobacco p head setled p. on the Church & Clergy throughout the Province which he abuseth by not applying it as intended & Orders the Clergy to be defrauded to the great Prejudice of Carrying on so pious a Work in that Countrey To this Article Mr Clark says he knows Nothing of it Mr Iames Crawford Attorney at Law being Sent for came Whereupon was Produced a Paper Containing Several Articles of Charge against his Excellency the Governor which the Justices Grand Iury and the several Attorneys Practitioners of the Provincial Court had made Answer & Signed & the said Mr Crawford being asked why he Refused doing the like he makes Answer that he made a Rash Oath to himself in the Assembly time that he would not Concern himself either the one way or the other With those Articles but being Sworn upon the Holy Evangelist before Robert Smith Esqr
