    Rivers on the Eastern Shore of the said Province to Susque- Lib. H. D.

    hannah River with full power and authority to enter into any

    Ship bottom Boate or other Vessell, as also into any Shop

    House Warehouse Hostry or other place whatsoever and to

    make dilligent search into any Wagon or Cart Trunck, Chest,

    pack, Case Truss or any other parcell or package whatsoever

    for any goods Wares Merchandizes to be Imported or p. 165

    exported either by Land or Water into or out of the said

    Province or whereof the Customs and duties have not been

    duly paid and the same to seize for his Majtes use and also to

    put in execution all other lawfull powers and Authorityes upon

    the highwaies and Roads in the said Province of Maryland,

    And also in the Province of Pensilvania. For the better

    manageing & collecting the said dutyes in all things as the law

    directs following & observing all Rules and Instructions as

    you shall from time to time receive from the Commissrs of his

    Majtes Customs in England or from the Comissrs of his Majtes

    Customs for the time being Given under my hand and Seale

    of the Office at the Port of Annapolis the four and twentieth

    day of December, and in the ninth year of his Majesties

    Reign Anno Doqme 1697.

             Rideing Surveyr of his Majtes Customs at the

    Surveyors Rivers of Bohemia and Sassafras and also at the

    Instructions heads of all the Rivers on the Easterne Shore to

    Susquehannah.

      1st You will herewith receive a Booke of Rates & also the

    Act made in the 7th & 8th years of his psent Majtes Reign Enti

    tuled an Act for the preventing of frauds and the regulating

    abuses in the Plantation trade.

      2ndly You are before your entring upon the said Office to

    take the Oaths appointed by Act of Parliament to be taken

    instead of the Oathes of Allegience and Supremacie & sub

    scribe the test and also the Oath for the due observing the

    severall Acts of Parliament relating to trade and the faithfull

    discharge of your office.

       You are to Examine and make strict search into all Shipps

    & Vessells whatsoever trading in those Rivers or at the heads

    of any of them Between this Province of Maryland and to &

    from any Town River place and Creek in the Province of

    Pensilvania, and also to search any Wagon or Cart Trunck

    Chest Pack Case Truss or any other parcell or paccage what

    soever, for any Tobacco Goods Wares and Merchandizes to

    be imported or exported either by Land and Water whereof
