and Grand Jury of the Provinciall Court the Committee for Lib. H. D. laying the leavy and the Gentlemen that went upon the Indian treaty (who are most of them now gone out of Town) for to go to his Exncy Sr Edmund Andros in Virginia, upon his Majtes and the Countreys service; therefore in point of state cannot be altered; but if they have anything in matter of Law to urge, it will be referred to his Majtes Lawyers to be consulted. And it is withall signifyed that before anything of this happening the sd Esqr Tench made all the Interest and used all the Arguments he could to be excused from under taking the sd Negotiation. wch was not admitted off; therefore being so solemnly appointed upon an affair of so high nature, the motion cannot be granted; but that if upon his return they have anything to offer, it will be considered. It being generally reported that there is a Spring or two of water in St Maryes County arising out of some Land belong ing to Capt Ino Dent of Charles County, commonly known and called by the name of the Coole springs; wch water is said to be lately discovered to have a very medicinal and healing quality in it & proves very effectual to the curing all sorts of distempers and diseases of body and tht abundance of impotent, lame and diseased people do dayly flock thither for cure & receive great benefitt thereby. Ordered that strict inquiry be made by the sd Capt Dent & others living neer that place, what persons have by virtue of the sd water been cured, and of what manner of distempers, and in what nature; and that care be taken to have them summoned to make Oath thereto before some Magistrate, the is to be Recorded in the County Court, where such Oath is taken, and an Authentick Copy thereof transmitted unto his Exncy wth all convenient speed. The following Address was presented from the Comittee appointed for laying the Publick leavy by the hands of the Honoble Thomas Tench Esqr and Mr Wm Bladen Clerk of the sd Comittee Vizt
Port of Annapolis October 22nd 1697. By the Comittee for apportioning the publick Leavy this present 1697. May it please your Excellency. fforasmuch as we find there is 20053 l of Tobbo due to severall persons, who by the last Sessions of Assembly were sent upon the Indian treaty; and since this Cornittee have not tobacco left wherwithall to discharge the same. We humbly request yor Exncy will be favourably pleased to borrow so 18
