270 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. H. D. vincial Court of this Province be adjourned until the last Tuesday in ffebry next, at wch Court as well matters by Iuries as Appeals and Writts of Error &ca will be tryed and that the Governr & Councill for hearing Appeals & writts of Error will sitt the third day after the end of the said Court. ffr: Nicholson
Presented by the Clerk of this Board the following Petition was by Ordr Read Vizt To his EXnCY ffrancis Nicholson Esqr Capt Genll & Governr in Chief of his Majtes Province of Maryland, and to his Majtes honoble Councill now sitting.
The Humble Petition of Henry Denton Clk. Sheweth P. That he severall times addressed himselfe to the last Assembly for bettering his Sa!lary as Clerk to his Majtes Honoble Councill, being allowed only by the House the sum of 12000 lbs of Tobo (the usual Sallary settled on the former Clerks in that Station) wch they totally Rejected notwithstand ing yor Petitioner made them sensible of the vast differences betwixt the business of that time & now; besides the great charge of constantly supplying the Office wth Pen, Inke, wax & paper &ca and hiring Clerks. That since Iune last it hath cost yor Petitioner near nine pounds Sterll ready money in hireing Clerkes to expedite & his Majtes & the Countreys business besides finding them accommodations whilst they writt, as p receipts hereunto annext may appear. That at this present he imployes an Assistant Clerke be sides a Deputy and is out of pocquett a great deale for furnishing paper &ca That by the Order of this Honoble Board he is to receive, take charge and look after all manner of Papers Relating to Navall affairs wthin this his Majtes Province, and finds business every way increasing upon him; Therefore humbly prayes yor Exncy & Honors tender consideration of the prmisses, and tht you would be pleased to setle the Pro vincial Amerciaments (being in your Exncy and Honours guift) upon yor Petitioner towards furnishing his Office with all necessaries and paying assistant Clerks, wch he is forced to hire for the ready and quick dispatch, of business (besides keeping a Deputy) by wch means yor Petitioner will be encouraged more chearfully and diligently to attend the duty of his Office, and enabled to defray the great charge thereby accruing And yor Petitioner as in duty bound Shall ever pray &ca
