Lib. H. D. that the Gentlemen that go out of Caecill County acquaint the Shevanor Indians how that his Exncy never recd those presents said to be sent by Coll Herman. They do also think it convenient that two former Ordrs about laying out the Land for the Choptanck Indians may be renewed & comply'd with, wch (through sickness of Major Smithson the Surveyor) is represented not yet to be done. About laying out land for the Nanticoke Indians, this Com mittee do humbly leave it to further consideration. This Comittee taking into consideration the great care and trouble tht his Exncy our Governr has taken for promoting the Kings Honor and preservation of his Majtes Province of Mary land, do humbly return their heartiest Thanks and acknowl edgments and do further request him to represent to the Right Honoble the Lords of the Councill for Trade and fforreign Plantations the present condition of this Province so dangerous and chargeable to the Inhabitants thereof upon these bloody attempts and further apprehended de signes of the Indians, and that upon these considerations his Exncy & Councill will be pleased to request of their Lordshipps to move his Sacred Majesty to discharge them from further contributing towards the assistance of New Yorke; The charge & burthen of their own defence (upon these alarmes) lying so heavy upon them. Lastly all this is humbly submitted to his Exncys better Iudgment and that of the next Genll meeting of the Honoble his Maytes Councill & Iustices of the Provinciall Court &Ca Signed p Ordr Henr Denton Clk of the Comittee
The said returne is approved off; only it is observed that some of the proposalls are not fully answer'd; Vizt That of desiring his Exncy to Order the Rangers to keep frequent correspondence wth the Maryland Rangers &ca to agree upon the alarm; and tht of giving a Lattitude to the Gentlemen tht go, for to discourse any other matters as they shall think fitt for his Majtes Service &ca All wch with some other matters being agreed upon; the severall particulars relating to that affair (concluded to be sent wth the Gentlemen appointed to go to Virginia) were by Ordr drawn up in manner following. Vizt At a meeting & consultation held about Indian Affairs at the new State house, at the town and Port of Annapolis In his Majtes Province of Maryland the 15th day of Octobr Anno° 1697.
