broke out of Philadelphia Goal, which are Supposed to be of Lib. H. D. Capt Every's Crew. That as he travell'd through Pensilvania and the Jerseys to New York, great inquiry was made of him (understanding he was sent by his EXnCY Sr Edmund Andros, his Mats Governr of Virga upon an Express) whether or no he brought any Orders concerning the Privateers; or if the Privateers were taken up in Virginia. Taken before his EXnCY the Governr at the Port of Annapolis the ffirst day of July Anno 1697.
By his Exncy the Governr &Ca July the 1st 1697. Vpon Credible Information this day Rëcd: how that a great many Privateers and Pyrates lay shelter'd up and Down the Province of Pensylvania whereby Encouragemt is not only given to the looser sort of Seamen and Servants of the Adjacent Governmts to Run to them, but are also protected, harbour'd, Aided and Assisted by Open fforce, and Violence among them; as well Seamen belonging to his Mats Men of Warr as merchant men, dayly Comitting Severall Violences and Out rages, to the very great disservice of his Maty and Damage of his Subjects. And fforasmuch as it is to be ifeard they may have some design on ffoot so soon as an oportunity Offers to Effect it, whereby the ffrontier parts of this his Mats Province lay Equally Exposed to Hazard with those of Pensilvania. Ordered therefore that publick and Speedy Notice be given to all Officers Military and Civill belonging to Ccecill County within this his Mats Province of Maryland and to all Masters of ships Riding in those parts, that they be upon their Guard and take particular Care (more especially the Sherrift) to prevent disturbances, mischiefs or any Attempts which possi bly may be made by the sd Privateers and Pyrates and the Inhabitants and Seamen Runing to them.
