D. understanding they have now an Annuall Sallary allowed them for keeping Boat and hands, he thinks it for his Mats Service that they immediately fit themselves therewith and does advise that they each of them take a Survey or View of their District and mark well what Rivers, harboures and Creeks are within the Same, without which they will be much to seek and that after they have taken such view, they make return, what place they think most proper for their Residence, and withall does recommend that Mr Muschamp keep a ffre quent and good Correspondence with his Mats Collr of Poto- mock on Virginia side which will be a good means to prevent any illegall Trade used that way. The Information of John Chiles of his Mats Colony of Virg This Informant Saith. That being lately at New York he happen'd in Company with the Guner belonging to his mats ifrigot the Richmond, whom he heard telling to Some Gentlemen then in Company how that he was sent (by Capt Evans his Comander) to Pen silvania in pursuit of three Runaway Seamen; where he obtain'd a Justices Warrant; by virtue whereof two of the sd Runaways were Seiz'd and in his Custody but afterwards Rescued from him by Severall Seamen in the Town of Phila delphia, and he himself beaten and grossly abused by them particularly at the Instigation of one Mr Andrew Morris a Magistrate and one of the Councill of that Governmt That he heard say at Philadelphia, how that Charles Goss a Pyrate was kill'd there, by a ffrench Man about Sunday last was a Sen. night, and that at the sd Goss's ffunerall, one Capt Snead a Magistrate of that place had Stab'd a Man as he was Standing upon his Guard and defending himself from ffour or ffive men that assaulted him there. That there lyes a great Ship betwixt upland & Philadelphia said to be mounted with thirty six Gun's, which this Informt Say's brought in a great many Servants, but very few Goods for which he had Cocquets as this Informant was told by Mr Vanderheyden and some others who Reported likewise that they believed the sd Ship had brought in more goods by Reason she Stay'd some time below, before she Came up into those parts, where it is imagin'd She might put the Same on Shore. p. 532 The sd Informant further Saith that he heard it Credibly Reported there were a great many privateers up and down the Governmt of Pensilvania That two of them had lately
