by Ordr inspected and found to be Nothing but Bonds, Cer- Lib. H. D. tificates and Some lists of Shiping. Ordered that the sd Coll: Brown and Mr Jenckins be writt p. 522 to, that they may be acquainted with the Receipt of the sd Papers and take Care of all other papers to be deliverd to Mr West the prsent Navll Officer and that the Accots and bills be sent over to his Exncy by the ffirst oportunity, or otherwise to George Plater Esq his Mats Recr in Ordr that the Quarter part thereof may by him be laid out for Arms &ca pursuant to his Mats Royall Instructions. Produced and Read the Return of the Gentlemen Sent upon the Indian Treaty. Ordered that the Same be Enter'd in the Journall of this Board; the which followes in these words Vizt
Virga June 8th being Tuesday 1697. Iournall kept by the Severall persons appointed by his Exncy ffrancis Nicholson Esq Capt Genll & Governr in Chief in and Over his mats Province of Maryland and the members of the House of Delegates in Assembly by them Instructed to treat with the Piscattoway Indians at the mountains or else where. About nine a Clock at Night we Arrived at Capt Masons where we understood that abt Twenty Indians past by that day to Mr Ousleys; Capt Mason not being at home could not be Inform'd what Indians they were, therefore the next morning Early, being wednesday we Rid to the place where they were Setled and planted Corn some time before. We found them to be part Pomunkey, the Mattawoman King, and Some Piscattoway Indians; We then Treated with them and discovered our business. He imputed the Cause of his Going away to the Piscattoways, and assured Us if the Emperor would not returne to the place of his former abode, they would either Joyn with the Choptico Indians or Settle at Pomunkey, but would not Conclude upon Either till they understood what the Emprs answer and Resolutions were; We then Returned to Capt Masons and from thence writ to his Exncy Sr Edmund Andros, as p Copy herewith sent, about nine a Clock the Same day, being the ninth, we set out towards the Mountains, and with much difficulty forceing through thickets and deep Runes of Water that no path appeared, We got within Seaven miles of the Indian ffort and lodged that night, Early the next morning being Thursday, the 10th instant we got to the ffoot of the Mountain, from thence toyled in walking up and down the sd mountain to the ffort, which Judged to be at least two miles.
