In Some time we Signifyed to him that we were sent by his Exncy the Governr of Maryland and Assembly to Treat with him and his Great men and desir'd that he would call together that we might Conferr. He answer'd that Some were abroad when the Sun lower'd, he Expected them in; We patiently waited till about two a Clock, then pressed the Emperor again to Call his men together, to which he complyed and Came and Sate down with Us. Then by our Interpreter we let them all know that we were sent by his ExncY the Governr of Maryland and Assembly Sitting when we parted from Annapolis to know the reasons why they deserted their habitacons in Maryland and to make proposalls to them. Vpon which we Read the Articles of Peace made with them in Governr Copleys time and the Confirmation of the Same in Anno 1696, with Governr Nicholson and Assembly. All which they remember and acknowledged. We Quaerid whether there was any breach of any of those Articles made of our parts of which one of the Young men made Complaint against James Bigger that he threatened to shoot him for hunting on his Land Robert Gater he also Complains off that he stole a Deere from him. As to the last Article the Emperr Answer'd that he tender'd his Exncy Govr Nicholson the Bowe and two Arrows who Ordered him to pay the Same to Coll: Darnall for the Lord Baltemore's use, to whom the Emperor says he owes no Tribute nor Subjection but to the King of England, to whom lie is ready to pay. Then was read and Interpreted to them the proposalls sent by Us, to which they Answer'd, that the Occasion of their fflight So suddenly and in that manner, was to Secure their Wives and Children; for they Understood that the English fforces were Ordered to Come down upon them in a few days, this they heard by Severall persons which put them in great ifright they did not think themselves Secure till fforted in that place or to that Effect. We blamed them for not applying themselves to Some of the Governmt for better Satisfaction They Answer'd that they found Coll: Addison Spoke angry to them, therefore p. 254 Concluded all the English were likewise Angry; Upon wch Coll: Addison repeated his discourse with the Emperor and as near as he Could the purport of what was sworn against him; which we added was occasion Enough for the Coll: to speak and the whole Countrey to Suspect them to be Guilty of the murder of the Negro. We further told them that the Circumstances were high tho we could not prove it more possitively against them To which the Emperor Answer'd that
