104 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. H. D. gave directions for issuing the following Orders to the Severall Counties of the Province, and tht the sd Lre might be laid before the House of Delegates for their Answer to the Severall Q uaeries to be Given.
Ordr to the Ordered that the Colonell of each respective
Colonels tht the Militia County within this Province give Notice to the
Officers send Severall Militia Officers under their Comand that perfect Lists of their Troops they forthwith send perfect lists of their respec & Company's tive Troops and Companys with the name of every Officer and Private Centinell &ca And how the
Same are Accoutred &ca both as to the Horse, foot and Dra goon, and that Care be taken to have the Same Regulated & Modell'd according to the Directions laid Down in a Certain Ordr of Counci!l and Instructions formerly Sent to the ffield Officers of the Severall County's bearing date the 9th day of Octo. Anno 1694.
Ordr to the Ordered that the Constables of the Severall
Constables to take a List of Hundreds of the Province do at the time of their the Number of going about (by Law) to take the list of Taxables each ffamily &ca & of their take also a ifair Accot in a Seperate Sheet of
p. 490 Religion &ca Paper of the Number of People in each respective ifamily Contain'd as well of the Women and Children as men, and that they distinguish in their Accot taken the Negroes and Servants from the ffree both as to the number and Sex— and that they likewise take an Exact List of all the Roman Catholicks; Quakers and other persons dissenting from the Church of England as also the Number of the latter Contain'd in each hundred together with an Accot of what new Inhabi tants are Come into Each Parish and who are gone out and whither they are gone; all which they are hereby directed to get Carefully done and Return lists of the Same accordingly unto his Exncy at the Port of Annapolis with all possible Speed wherein they are in no wise to ffaile at their Utmost perrill, hereby Comanding the Sherriffs to give Copy of this Ordr to each respective Constable within his Bayliwick forthwith.
Ordr to the Ordered that the Sherriffs of the Province do List of all a upon Sight hereof make Strict inquiry what Ships Ships Ves- or other Vessells Trading to Sea, have been built sels built & . . . Sea faring in their Respective Counties Since his Mats Happy Men belong. Government Erected and Established here, and ing to each Countywhat are now a building as also what sloops and shallops to the Counties belong and that they
take an Exact list thereof together with an Accot of the
