Baker Five Pounds twelve shillings and six Pence due him p
Acct passed by the Depy Aud.
Ordered That the western shore Treasurer pay to Capt
David Lynn of the 7th Regimt two thousand Dollars in leiw of
the Articles for the present year allowed by the late Act of Assy

[Council to James Calhoun.]

In Council Annapolis 17th Septr 1779
Sir
Inclosed you have Licence indorsed on your Appointments
of Assistants. Your Commission from Genl Greene appoints
you Depy Qr Master Genl of the Army of the United States
for the Western Shore of Maryland from whence it would
seem that all who acted in this Department on the Western
Shore, should be subordinate to you. The 13th Inst Colo
Charles Beatty produced us a Commission from John Cox
Asst Qur Mr Genl dated Lancaster 10th April 1778 nominating
and appointing him (C. B.) to act do & perform all and
singular the Business of Depy Qr Mr Genl with the Priviledge
of making Purchases in the County of Fredk of Horses &ca
Colo Beatty requested and had a Licence for himself as well as
on the 14th for Richd Butler & Nichs Tice as his Assistants.
We do not know that the Business will be the worse done
for your & their Appointments, but there appears to us a
Degree of Inconsistency in different People acting in the
same Place, in the same Business, with equal Powers. We did
not know what Proportion of Cannon & what of Musquet Pow-
der we had at Fredk, but imagined we had, by much the
Greatest Part of Cannon. As it turns out otherwise we would
by all Means have the 30 thou sand Weight mde up of Musquet
Powder and for that Purpose write to Colo Bruce the inclosed

We are just advised by Mr Calhoun that our Magazine at
Frederick had only 11076lb, of Cannon Powder, which has been
delivered with 5228lb of musquet, we imagined the Powder
there was principally Cannon and therefore restricted the
Quantity of Musquet Powder in our former Letter, as it is, you
will be pleased to make up of the Musquet Powder, with
