[Council to H. Hollingsworth.]

In Council Annaps 14th May 1779
Sir
The Reasons which induced us to recommend the Wheat
& Flour to your Care was, an Opinion we had that you would
expedite the Grinding of the Wheat, and we imagined the
Transportation of the Flour to be immediately within your
Province. The Shorts and Bran, we thought would be useful
as Forage. The extraordinary Trouble & Expence you are at,
ought to be paid for & we are willing to make you a just
Allowance. The Whole is for the Use of the Continent, not a
single Pound for this State and we wish that the Efforts we
make, which are in Consequence of a new Duty laid on us by
the Assembly and our Wish to forward the General Service,
may be so heartily seconded, as that we may obtain the End,
a plentiful supply for the Army. We inclose you a copy of
our Letter of the 30th of April, from your not mentioning it,
we suspect you have not received it: we also wrote to you the
Day befor yesterday, advising you of our having received
Intelligence of a Fleet being in the Bay; we have heard nothing
of it since, though it seems to correspond with Intelligence
received by this Day's Post from Philadelphia, of a Fleet of
about that Number having sailed from New York. We think it
would be prudent, not to let too much lie at the Head of Elk
if, as some suppose, Virginia & Maryland should be their
Objects, they may probably attempt to destroy the Stores at
the Head of Elk

In Council Annapolis 14th May 1779
Sir.
The Honble Govr Morris, by Letter of the 21st Apl desired,
that the Flour purchased by this State for the use of the Army
should be lodged in Stores on the Waters of this Bay under
Inspection of Officers appointed by this State. That it should
be at the Order of the Chairman of the Committee of Con-
gress on the Commy & Quarter master's Departmts we
have given Orders agreeable to Mr Morris's Letter and sup-
pose from that, the Flour was not to be put into the Commis-
sary's Hands. If it should be necessary to transport any of it
to Christeen, an Order must be had from the Committee &, if
the Order is small, we can answer it with Flour which lies at
