seven Pounds, seventeen shillings & four Pence due himself
per Accts passed by the Aud Gl
Commissions of a Letter of Marque & Reprisal issued to
John Hanson Commr of the Schooner James 50 Tons burthen,
mounting 2 Carriage Guns, 6 Howitze & 5 small Arms, belong-
ing to David Steward & others of Baltimore
Whereas the Brewhouse of James Sterett, a Warehouse of
Hugh Young and a Kitchen all in Baltimore Town have lately
at Different times been burnt down and there is great Reason
to Suspect that the said Houses were maliciously Set on Fire,
and lately the Stable of James Leiston and the Stable of Jacob
Mires in Baltimore Town have been attempted to be Burnt by
putting fire therein which was happily discovered Time enough
to prevent the Effect most wickedly intended. I therefore
with the advice of the Council promise a Pardon to any Person
concerned in the burning or Setting Fire to all or any of the
said Houses who shall first make Discovery to a Magistrate of
his or her accomplices in the said Crime
Charles Jones, Samuel W. Magruder and Richard Thomp-
son Justices of the Peace for Montgomery County certify under
their hands and Seals "That Thomas Richardson Assistant
"Commissary of Purchases for the Continental Army hath this
"Day reported to us that the Quantity of Wheat which was
"lately seized by him in George Town as the Property of a
"certain John Hall of Baltimore County (which seizure has been
"approved of by us) has been ascertained and said Wheat
"received by him, and that the whole Quantity thereof is two
"hundred and forty eight Bushells."

In Council Annapolis 12th Febry 1779
Sir.
The Copy of the Inlistment you inclosed us will not answer
our Design, we want, if necessary, to lay before the Assembly,
the Inlistments of the Men now in the Matross Company at
Baltimore, we therefore request you will send us the Original
Inlistments by the first safe Hand. Sergeant Cornwell's
Confinement was for your Safety as well as to prevent such
attrocious Behaviour from others and it was, if we remember
right, under an Idea that the State Regulations had not pro-
vided for the Case; the Continental Regulations, if introduced
since the Commission of the Offence, cannot govern in the
Measure of Punishment yet if you think the Sergeant may
with Safety to yourself and without any bad Effects from the
Example, be set at Liberty, we have no Objection, perhaps
