the cause of Britain. They likewise talked of landing at
another place called Musk Melon near Cape Henlopen. They
are to have the priviledge of choosing their own officers, and
to be provided with Arms and Accoutrements and a sufficient
quantity of Provision to last them until they get through the
British Lines, afterwards they are to shift for themselves, and
be no farther charge to the British Government. Some of
them were afraid that General Clinton would take advantage
of their signing this Association by keeping them as a Garrison
for New York &c. but they hoped they would be permitted to
go upon this their favorite Expedition, they being so well ac-
quainted with that part of the Country.
The above was a public proposal made on the Commons
by a person not dress'd like an Officer. I remarked that he

squinted.

Thursday 22d October 1778

Present as on Yesterday
Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Daniel of
Saint Thomas Jenifer Esqr eight thousand six hundred and
ninteen pounds Seventeen Shillings and Eleven pence for
Goods purchased by the Governor & council of J. M. Nesbitt
& Co for this State per their Order to Geo: Meade & Co
assigned to Major Jenifer
Capt Joshua Lunn of the State of Maryland who hath been
absent therefrom in parts beyond the Seas for about eleven
Months last past and hath lately that is to say within three
Months last past returned into this State appeared before the
Governor & Council and before them did take repeat and
Suscribe the Oath of Fidelity and Support to this State con-
tained in the Act entitled An Act to punish certain Crimes and
Misdemeanors and to prevent the Growth of Toryism.

Friday 23d October 1778.

Present as on yesterday and Thos Sim Lee Esqr
Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Nicholas
Sewall, fifteen Pounds per Acct passed by the Prinl Cl. to the
Aud: Genl
Ordered that the western shore Treasurer pay to Robert
Amoss ten Pounds three shillings and four pence due himself
and two pounds seventeen shillings and nine for the use of
Aquila Parker per Accts passed by the Prinl Cl. to the And:
Genl
