Whitehall Produced also & Read a Proclamation drawn,vpon a Propo sail made to the House, relating to building Bridewells, which was signed by his Exncy & passed the Broad Seal of the Province.
The sd Proclamation follows in these Words, Vizt
By his Exncy the Capt Genll &ca Maryland ss: A Proclamation
Proclama- Whereas a Proposall being made to the House of tion Relating to Bridewells Burgesses by the honoble his Mats Councill of this &ca province in Assembly lately met & Convened, for
the Erecting a publick Bridewell or house of Correction, wherein all idle & Vagrant persons may be put and kept at worke, by which Proposall it was also signifyed, that if any person or persons would vndertake to build & keepe the same, at their own proper Charge, they might have Lease Whitehall thereof for terme of years &ca And fforasmuch as the Gen tlemen of the House of Delegates & Burgesses have by their Assent to the sd proposall exprest their well liking & approbation of the same, have therefore (by advice in Councill) thought fit to publish and make known and do accordingly proclame & signify that such persons as are minded & willing to vndertake and Manage such a Concern, that they would draw vp in writing what proposalls they have to Offer in or about carrying on & managing the sd Design by them to be transmitted vnto the Justices of the severall County Courts for them to do therein, according to the Laws & Usuall Customs of England in such Case, and of this p. 337 Countrey, hereby strictly Commanding the severall Sffes of the province to make Proclamation hereof in all Churches, Chappells & other publick places of Meeting within their respective Counties; Given at the Port of Annapolis vnder the Broad Seal of the Province this 13th day of May 1 696, and in the Eigth year of the Reign of our Soveraign Lord King William the third &ca God Save the King. ffr: Nicholson.
