     Scotland ifrance and Ireland Defender of the ffaith, &cea

   

     To our Trusty and Welbeloved ffran: Nicholson Esqr our

    Capt Gen: and Governr in Cheif of our Province & Territory

    of Maryland in America, and to the Governr or Commander

    in Cheif of our sd province and Territory for the time being,

    Greeting, We do hereby Authorize you to vse the Seal of

    tht our province & Territory Engraven. with the Name &

    Inscription of us & our late Royall Consort Queen [Mary] ofever

    Blessed Memory, ffor Sealing all things whatsoever tht Shall

    pass the Seal of our sd Province and Territory under your

    Governt untill we shall give Ordr for another Seal to be En-

    graven with our own Royall Name and Inscription only,

    Given at our Cort at Whitehall the ffourteenth day of March

    1694/5 In the Seventh year of our Reign.

     The following Letter being Received by his Excellency

    from the Governr of New York since the sitting of the last

    Councill, was Ordered to be Entred in the Councill Book

    together with his Excells Answer to the said Letter, and are

    as follows, Vizt.

   

                        New York March the 28th 1696.

    Governr of Sr

    New Yorks

    Letter to his I take hold of this opportunity (Mr Smith the

    Excellency. Bearer going your way) to put your Exncy in mind

    of my last of the 19th of ffebry past and of the great necessity

    there is of giving your assistance according to her late Majes- p. 307

    ties Letter many of the fforces late come over from the hard

    ship they vndergo having only 8d New York Money and the

    Countrey where they are Garrisoned laid Waste are ruin so

    that I must be necessitated without the assistance of the Quota

    to make as great detachmts of Men in this poor province as

    formerly which is a more heavy burden than the pay I do

    therefore again make Application to you for Quota and that

    the pay of those shall be wanting be transmitted for the ease

    of this Province and am

                        Yor Excell most humble
