D. and have accordingly given Power to the Respective Governrs to apply the Same as there Shall be Occasion; We have there upon Signifyed Our Will and Pleasure to our Trusty and well Beloved Sr Edmund Andros our Governr in Cheif of our Colony of Virginia; And to our Trusty and Welbeloved Francis Nicholson our Governr in Cheif of our Province of Maryland to dispose of the sd Severall Sumes of ffive hundred pounds and two hundred pounds respectively upon your application towards the Defence and Security of our Province of New York which sd Respective Sumes of ffive hundred pounds and two hundred Pounds We are pleased to declare shall be instead of the Quotas or other Assistance to be given by our sd Colony of Virginia & Province of Maryland towards the Defence and Security of our sd province of New York untill we shall Signifye our further Pleasure herein; Given at our Court of Kensington this Second day of Janry 1696/5 In the Seventh year of our Reign. Whitehall the 10th of Janury ‘96/5 Gentlemen Mr Poveys I have Received by Sr Thomas Laurence the Lre to the Governor & ifavour you were pleased to doe me by Your Letter Councill & of the 18th of Octobr for which and the good Sence Assembly of Maryland You are pleased to Retain of my Services I cannot Omitt to Return a most Gratefull acknowledgemt and to assure you that to the Utmost of my Power I shall con tinue my Endeavours for the good of the province of Mary land and though I may not properly Appear as the publick Agent of the province Yet if my Care for the promoting the Publick Affair's of the Countrey and the procuring a Speedy Dispatch of them through the Severall Offices may be thought worthy Your acceptance, I shall Readily perform that part, Sr Thomas Laurence, who has indifefaticably Solicited the Affairs of the Province during his Stay here, will give you a perfect Accot of all things relating to the Severall matters transmitted from Maryland, Such of them as have met with Difficulties, So as to Remain undetermined Shall be dispatcht with all the Speed that may be, And as well in this as in all other matters relating to the publick Welfare of the province of Maryland I Shall Endeavour to approve my Self, Gentlemen Yor most ffaithfull & humble Servt John Povey
