upon the application of our Governr or Commandr in Cheif of Lib. H. D. New York, which sd Sume of two hundred pounds applyed towards the assistance of our sd Province, We are pleased to declare, Shall be instead of the Quota or other assistance to be given by our sd Province of Maryland towards the Defence and Security of our said province of New York untill upon further Consideration of this matter We Shall give other Directions herein: And for So Doing this Shall be your War rant. Given at our Court at Kensington this Second day of Janry 1696/5 In the Seventh year of our Reign. By His Majesties Command. Governr of Maryland abt Shewsbury Assistance for New York.
W.R: His Mats Trusty and Welbeloved We Greet you well: Letter to the Governr of Whereas upon your Representation, that notwith New York standing Our Pleasure Signifyed to our Severall Quota of Colonies in the Northern parts of America that they Virga and should Agree upon a Quota of Men or other assist- Maryland ance to be given by them Respectively for the Defence of our Province of New York Some of the said Colonies having Omitted to Send Comrs to adjust the Said Quota's, nothing had been done therein; The Severall Gov- p. 2 ernrs of our sd Colonies were directed to send the Respective Quota's of Men or other Assistance appointed by Us for the Defence & Security of our sd Province; We declaring our pleasure that two hundred fforty Men of our Militia of our Colony of Virga and one hundred and Sixty men of our Militia of our Province of Maryland Should be the measure of the Assistance to be given by our sd Colony and Province upon the application of our Governr or Commander in Cheif of our province of New York, and it having been Represented unto Us by our Respective Governrs of our Colonies of Virginia and Maryland that having in Obedience to our Commands herein recommended to the Care of the Generall Assembly's of our Sd Colony and province Respectively the providing fitt Supplys for the sd Quota's they had Alledged that the Inhab itants being very poor by Reason of the Warr and the Lowe price of Tobacco, and the apprehensions of Forreign Indians putting the Countrey to Great Charges to Secure their ifrontiers, they are become incapable of affording any Assistance to New York And had humbly pray'd to be Excused from all Con tribution of tht Nature, But that for the Present the Respective Assembly's have appropriated the Sume of ffive hundred Pounds for our Colony of Virginia and two hundred pounds for our Province of Maryland to Lye ready for the sd Service
