334 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1694 97.

Lib. H. D. We severall times prest it to the house, the Result whereof

I have here inclosed sent, and according to the request of the

Whitehall  House have sent your Excell the Bills for 1 33 lbs: 8s: 7d: strl

together with two Letters of advice about the same Bills to

my Merchant to pay them. Your Excell has not been pleased

to Answer that part of my Letter of the 17th of August past

touching invading or being invaded, so that not knowing the

certainty is one Reason that has occasioned the Assembly to

Raise more Rangers for the security of our ifrontiers & to

put the Militia in a more ready posture. As to what your

Excell writes concerning Arms, Amunition, Officers pay &

other incidents, I can say no more than what I have already.

And I am very sorry that the Charge of the Warr has been

so heavy vpon the province of New York; but I find that

neither his Mats honoble Councill nor the Burgesses of the

House of Assembly are of Opinion that the province of New

York is the safety of this.

As the ffrench are very diligent both by force & fraud in

endeavouring to debauch the ffive Nations of Indians (vnder

your Excell Comand) from their fidelity to the English, and

also of their design of Endeavouring to resettle Cadaracqui,

so it is not in the least to be doubted but that by your Exncies

Conduct & Courage they will be prevented of their designs

so farr as it is possible; but as for sending your Exncy men

from this Province, the inclosed Resolves of the House will

inform your Exncy so hoping to heare some more good News

from England of his Mats further good success in his Con-

         P. 255  quests both by Land & Sea, which if it comes to your

Excellency, I shall take it as a great honour to have an

Account of it, when I vnderstand your Excell has it not, the

same shall be sent you by Yor Excell humble Servant

                                               ffr: Nicholson

The Resolves of the House of Burgesses which were in the

       Whitehall above Letter inclosed, Vizt.

At a Councill in Assembly held at the Port of Annapolis

the 2d day of October, 1695.

                            Present

His Excellency ffrancis Nicholson Esqr Capt Genll &ca
