which had been continued from the of May 1692 by Lib. H. D. severall Adjournmts and Prorogations to Meet again on the 20th day of September 93, on which day the said Assembly did Meet accordingly and Sate till the 26th day of the same Month; But the late Governor Copley dyeing on the 9th day of September, Sr Edmond Andros Arrived the 25th with their Mats Commission to take the Governmt of Maryland and on the 26th dissolved the same. 2: The Members of the Councill are of Opinion that the Whitehall Reasons which Moved the late Governor Copley & Councill to Convene the said Assembly do still subsist with greater Reason. 3: That whereas vpon the Accession of every Governor to his Governmt the Generall Expectation of the Province is that an Assembly be called for the settleing a more perfect vnder standing between the Governor & Governmt The Gentlemen of the Councill do now vpon their particular knowledge Represent to your Exncy that the calling of an Assembly is both the expectation and humble desire of this Province of Maryland in Order to the passing of such publick Acts as may conduce to their Mats imediate service and to the generall Good & advantage of this their Province. ffor setling the publick Revenue; all Matters touching the Protestant Religion according to the doctrine & discipline of the Church of England as relating to the persons of Church Men and Establishing on them a competent Revenue; as also for Erecting free scholes with competent Maintenance the paymt of Arrears of publick Debts due to the Rangers and for publick Entertainments and vpon Bills of Exchange not paid with diverse other Reasons. They do further desire that Mr Cheseldyn being formerly Speaker of the house of Burgesses may be sent for and asked about it, who accordingly Appeared; His Exncy was pleased to aske him whether or no he thought the Calling of an Assem bly would be to the service of the King and good of the Countrey and what sentiments the Members of the house had p. 50 vpon the Dissolution of the last Assembly; To which he Answered that he believed the calling of an Assembly was generally expected throughout the Province, and that the interest of the Province would Require the same for severall weighty Reasons; Vizt such as Reviewing the Laws and pay ing off old Arrears, now become very great; and as to his Exncies last demand he does say that the suddain dissolution Whitehall of the last Assembly was very surprizing to the whole house. ffor which Reasons aforesaid there appearing a Necessity for the iniediate calling an Assembly; therefore 20th of Sep tember next is appointed for the Meeting of an Assembly
