Whereupon issued the following ordr of Councill viz

Ordered that Capt Samuel Bourne, and Captn Richard Ladd
of Calvert County forthwith upon sight hereof come and per-
sonally appeare before his Ldsp and Councill at the City of St
Maries to inform his Ldsp & Councill of such matters and
thinges as shall then and there be enquired of them; And
that the said Capt Bourne give speedy notice to the Dutch
Doctor (by him in a Letter to his Ldsp mentioned) that he also
forthwith be and give his attendance as aforesaid where he is
Required to have with to pduce a Letter he lately reed from
New Yorke from his mother there for his Ldsps peruseall the
same Importing matter of greate consequence to this Province
(as is Informed) Hereof lett none faile Dated at St Maries
the 27'h Day of ffebruary in the 7th yeare of the Dominion of
the Rt honble Charles &ca Annoq Domini 1681 :

Ordered also at the same time that Six men in Armes
under the Command of Capt Ninion Beale be commanded out
to continue Rangeing betweene the head of Pottuxen River
and the branches thereabouts up to the Susquehannogh ffort
for the discovery of any Indian Enemy that may appeare and
thereupon to give notice to Coll Chandler and Captn Brandt of
Charles County for their Governmt in the security and
Defence of that County and also to Coll Henry Jowles of
Calvert County for conveyance to his Ldspp accordingly as his
Ldspp hath already Commanded and now signifies to this board
by whom the same is approoved off.
His Ldsp informes the board that the sense of the last Com-
missions to the severall and Respective Collonells or Princi-
pall Officers of the militia of this Province had been wholly
misunderstood and misapplyed by the common people in
generall by vertue thereof assumeing to themselves a privi-
ledge for any single person upon any slight or frivolous occa-
sion or out of a humour to create a warr by killing any Indian
they meete with though the appeareance may be never soe
friendly and to a good Intent wch may proove of very ill Con-
sequence to the Province in generall and was wholly contrary
to his Ldspps designe in granting the sd Commissions wch he
intended should be made vse of onely at the discretion of the
Collonells themselves upon any urgent occasion where the
Defence and Security of their County or any single planta-
tion or person may require it, upon the discovery or appeare-
