themselves with fresh provisions, a beife being then hanging
up lately kill'd and fresh mutton, but one Thomas Ley (who
lay wind bound at sd Island in a bad sloope loaden with plank
and other Lumber) who well knew said Makeele, and pceive-
ing his designe to betray the strangers on shoare, tooke opor-

tunity to acquaint them of the danger, and practice of said
Roger, (as the mrchant of said Goods informed this Certificant)
whereupon they repaired on board, and gott to Sayle: Seve-
rall other attempts have been made by sd Makeele and Con-
federates, as credible reports have informed; and Indians have
been robb'd of gunns, furrs, &ca by them lately; When Ste-
vens was robb'd, was but 4 men knowne to be of the crew,
besides those 3 of the Island in confederacy; but supposed had
more Confederates on the adjacent Islands. That the said
Roger Makeele hath been a person of not onely evill fame,
but certainly of very bad life and conversation is well knowne
by at least Sixteene or Seaventeene yeares acquaintance of
Wm Anderson

Whereupon and for that severall credible Reports had been
reed: of the villaines insolencies and robberies of the said
Makele and his Accomplices upon the bay and else where
aswell in Virginia as Maryland
Ordered that a Lettr be writt to the Lord Effingham ac-
quainting him therewith & desireing his Lsp to use all meanes
for the suppressing the said Pirates and that warrants issue
to the severall sheriffes of this Province & to apprehend the said
Makeele and his Confederates or any of them wheresoever
they shall be found within their respective Bailywicks limitts
& precincts, which accordingly issued in manner foll (viz:)

Whereas Complaint hath to us been made, and we have
been most credibly informed that one Roger Makeele late an
Inhabitant of the Collony of Virginia with severall others his
confederates and Accomplices have for some considerable
time, and yett doe frequently infest this Province as Pirates
and Robbers, violently assaulting plundering and robbing the
good people of this Province, and others passing to and from
the same both by land and water, to the greate greviance
damage and injury of the Inhabitants of this Province, and
others as aforesaid, in their psons and Estates, and to the
breach of his Lsps peace, as hath been sufficiently sett forth,
and made known unto us.
These are therefore in the name of the Rt honble the Lord
Propry to will and require, as also strictly to charge and corn-
