At what time his Lspp produced and Communicated to this
board a Letter he had recd: from Capt Randolph Brandt
relateing to the state and condition of Charles County and
the Pascattoway Indians there undr the protection of the Eng-
lish who daily expected to be assaulted by the Northern
Indians comeing downe upon them, Capt. Brandt therefore
Desireing his Lspps orders whereby to Regulate himself com-
plaineing also that the Troopers under his Command were
fearfull of Arrests and Desired protection from his Lspp dure-
ing such time as they continued in the service of the Countrey
The Result of all wch ended in the following ordr of Coun-
cill viz.

Maryland ss:
Whereas severall Insolencies, outrages attempts

and murders have of late been offered made and committed
in and upon severall the Inhitants of this Province by the
Northern Indians who in all probability seeke and endeavour
the utter ruine and extirpation of the Pascattoway our neigh-
bouring and friend Indians and all others in peace and Amity
with the English Inhabitants of this Province in order to their
makeing way the more easily to assault and destroy the Eng-
lish themselves, and Whereas the said Northern Indians are
now daily expected by the said Pascattoways to come upon
and assault them contrary to the Articles of peace made with
the said Northern Indians at ffort Albany; and Whereas not

onely by the Articles made with the sd Pascattoways but also
for the better security and Defence of the Inhabitants of this
Province for the reasons aforesaid his Lspp the Rt honble the
Lord Propry holds himself obleiged to Defend and protect the
said Pascattoways and others the Neighbouring and ffriend
Indians within this Province. It is therefore Ordered that the
Troope of horse in Charles County under the command of
Capt Randolph Brandt doe still keepe rangeing in and about
the outermost and ffrontire Plantations, and other convenient
places of the sd County where it may be most requisite and
necessary for the defence and Safeguard of the Inhabi-
tants of the said County and also of our sd ffriend
Indians, and that dureing such their time of service
and soe long as they shall be employed in the Service of the
