June the 23th 1683: Tho. Vaughan
It was thereupon demanded of the said Vaughan whither
or noe he had formerly had any Intimacy or dealings of the
like nature with the aforesaid Llewellin from whence he might
soe confidently attempt to corrupt an Officer of his Lspps after
this manner
ffor answer he denyeth to have ever before been concerned
with the said Llewellin for one Acre of land besides the 3000
Acres mentioned in the Letter or to have had at any time any
Communication with the sd Llewellin to encourage him to this
attempt, which he was heartily sorry for, if it had been inju-
rious to him, but declares that he had noe such designe in it,
neither did he conceive it criminall when first he motioned it
in his Letter for that he had knowne it practicable amongst
Deputy Surveyors to returne into the Office the lynes of land
which they had not seen but were of another psons laying out
which he could make appeare, and produces a Letter under
the hands of Coll Lowe to that purpose.
Which was read & forthwith Command given by his Lspp to
his Secrys then prsent strictly to enquire thereinto & Examine
whither any Certificates had been returned unto the Office by
vertue thereof or any Grants passed under those Circum-
stances. The said Vaughan receiveth the severe check of his
Lspp and this board for his confidence in attempting to corrupt
the aforesd John Llewellin then Clk of the Land Office, and
Mr Robt Jones Deputy Surveyr but for his hearty recognition
& submission is discharged & the said John Llewellin Cleared
from the Imputation laid on him by reason thereof, his Inno-
