Safeguard and defence of your County by causeing all the
Inhabitants thereof under your Command, or otherwise liveing
upon the ffrontires of the County and in the road of the sd
Indians to stand and be upon their guard and posture of
defence, and in case of any assault or attempts made by any
of the sd Northern Indians or others, you are then to observe
and putt in execution your late Commission with such pru-
dence, moderation and discretion as to you shall seeme most
expedient for the preservation of the Inhabitants in their
persons and Estates according to the Tenor of your instruc-
tions also lately given you, which upon all occasions therein
proscribed you are to follow observe and obey, And for wch
this shall be your Sufficient warrant
Given at Mattapony Sewall the Twelfth day of July in the
Seaventh yeare of our Dominion &ca Annoq Dmi One
thousand Six hundred Eighty and Two.
To Coll George Wells Command'
in Chiefe under us of all our Militia
of ffoote in Baltemore County.

A Letter Received from Coll Chandler (viz:)

May it Please yor Ldsp:
Last weeke about the beginning thereof came the King of
Mattawoman and with him tenn or a dozen Indians to me,
and told me they were not able to live in their ffort at
Nanjemy the Sinniquo Indians did soe Oppress them, and
they being weeke were in Inevitable danger of being utterly
destroyed by them in the End: he farther alledged to me that
the Sinniquos come to English mens houses and the English
gives them provision and Cloatheing; and that the English
never takes any notice of them though the Enemy is almost
every day upon them, but in fine the Conclusion of his dis-
course was this that except your Ldspp would Assist them with
about Tenn or a dozen English to be in the ffort for the
defence thereof they would certainly forsake the ffort every
man of them, and either goe to Zachaja ffort or some where
else (Intimateing as much as if they would Deliver themselves
up to the Enemy) he would faine have had me to have sent
the Post downe then, about that, but I perswaded him that
when the Post went downe would be soone enough, and then
