p. 37 Then was the letter from Collonel John Washington and
Major Isaac Alderton to the Governour beareing date the 6th
of September instant read and debated upon the tenor whereof
followeth in these words Viz.
Right Honble :
Yesterday being Sunday the 5th of this instant Wee
received Order from the Rt Honble the Governour and Council
to us directed for the Summoning the Militia of the Severall
Countyes of the north side of Rappahanock and the South
side of Potomack that inquisition may be made of the true
causes of the severall murthers and Spoiles that have bin
done by the Indians in this his Maties Collony of Virginia and
by what nation or nations they have bin perpetrated and
demand Satisfaction and in case they Correspond not with
Our reasonable demand to levy such fforces as may compell
them by armes to that which is right, Wee are also Comanded
to Certifie Our designe to your Honr & to request your asist-
ance of men well Victualled and armed and to Signifie Our
purposes to follow the Enemy in yor Province of Maryland in
case the Emergency of affaires require it. To that end Wee
may have your Honrs permitt to doe Wee have therefore
requested Major Richard Lee and Capt Thomas Youell to
address themselves to your Honr and to acquaint you with the
premisses and to request your asistance and if you se it neces-
sary to send a Gent or two over to meet us and the militia of
the severall Countyes aforesaid at Coll Washingtons on
ffryday next to consult of the manner of proceeding of this
affaire and to advise us by letter what number of men you
will be pleased to Order to Our asistance

Whereupon it is Ordered That a Regiment of horse con-
sisting of five troopes fifty men in a Troope be forthwith raised
and fitted with Sufficient horses armes and ammunition for the
expeditious march against the Barbarous Enemy and to assist
the Virginia fforces now prepareing to pursue their Enemyes
the Susquehanough Indians as to demanding delivery those
