a Designe to distinguish his Subjects from other Enemy
Indians did then order all his Subjects that should frequent
the English Quarters to hold up their left armes tyed about
with a white Cloth in token of Amity and to lay downe their
weapons upon their approach to any English Plantation or
Encounter with any English man in the woods, and did
further grant that it should be lawfull for any English man to
kill any of his Subjects that should neglect or refuse soe to
Doe upon their approach or Encounter as aforesaid his Lspp
by the advice of his Councill did Declare that he was well
satisfied with the answer of the said Emperour, and that he
did beleive that the said Emperour was resolved to stand to
the peace heretofore made by the sd Emperour with his Lspp:
Yet in regard the Sinniquos and other Enemies of this Pro-
vince did frequently enter this Province and under friendly
shews deceive the People and Destroy them when Opor-
tunity presents His Ldspp by and with the advice and consent
of his Councill hath thought fitt to ordr and doth hereby order
the said Major Thomas Taylor to range with such and soe
many of his Troope as he shall see convenient and as often as
he shall think necessary to range for discovery of such
Enemyes as aforesaid, and (if need be) to call to his Assis-
tance Capt Henry Tripp with as many ffoote as they shall see
convenient for the Quiett and security of Dorchester County
as aforesaid that the Inhabitants of the said County may
keepe their homes and attend their Cropps and other affaires
till they shall by order from his Lspp: and Councill be drawne
together for their mutuall Defence & security

Maryld ss: Whereas Complaint hath to us been made of
severall Insolencyes Committed and affronts given by severall
Indians on the Easterne Shore in Dorchester County appeare-
ing there painted and in a warlike posture to the dread and
terror of the Inhabitants of our said County, ffor prevention
whereof for the future, and for the better discovery of the
Enemy, Wee have thought fitt and doe hereby (by and with
the advice and consent of our Councill) Authoreize and
Empower as also strictly charge and Command you Major
Thomas Taylor of the County aforesaid when and as often as
occasion shall require or you shall see convenient to Range
in any part of the said County with such and soe many of
your troope as you shall think necessary for such discovery as
aforesaid And in case you shall meete with any Indians
armed and painted as aforesaid you are to endeavour to
speake with them and Demand of them their Nation, their
